David Russell is currently owner and senior HSSE consultant for World Wide Safety Company, and is primarily responsible for preparing presentations and working with companies on HSE, Behavioural Based Safety, Waste Management, Incident Investigation, Effective Inspections & Audits as well as designing Safety Management Systems for global operations. He has been in the industry for more than 40 years.
David was the HSE Advisor at BP Rumaila Operating Organization [ROO] in Iraq with the responsibility for assuring the implementation of the ROO Drilling and Work Over HSE Safety Management System and procedures through the contractor’s SMS.
Prior to joining BP, David had worked for 22 years in fifteen different countries in Middle East and the African Region. He worked in various roles like HSE Advisor, Sr. HSE Manager, Project HSE Manager and HSE Engineer with companies like Sterling Energy, National Petroleum Construction Company, Pride Drilling International, Government of Saudi Arabia, Nabors Drilling International, ENI and Genel Energy and Smedvig Co. Int’l.
David was also employed as the Senior Occupational Health & Safety Officer in Newfoundland, Canada for sixteen years both as the Government offshore and onshore industrial OHS Officer. During this tenure David’s most notable accomplishment was the drafting of the Government Offshore Occupational Health & Safety Regulations for East Coast Canada that were later gazetted into law.
David has also been President of “National Safety Consulting Co. Inc.” and “Effective Speaking” training company in Canada. He is also a Competent Toastmaster for public speaking and presentations.
David was the Government advisory representative for designing and implementation of a new post-graduate program in “Safety Engineering Technology” at the College of Fisheries and Marine Navigation, which is now a part of Memorial University of Newfoundland, in St. John’s, Newfoundland. He continues to a visiting faculty at the Institute.
David is a certified Canadian Registered Safety Professional by the Association for Canadian Registered Safety Professionals since 1989. He is also certified by the World Safety Organization, part of United Nations, as a Certified Safety and Security Director, Certified Safety Executive, Certified Safety Manager and Certified Safety Specialist with two specialities – one in Petroleum Occupational Health and Safety and one in Oil Well Drilling & Servicing.
David has co-authored two books, “Who Cares Now, The Ocean Ranger Tragedy” and “The Rig”, both on the sinking of the rig Ocean Ranger and families who dealt with the loss of loved ones touching their trials and tribulations. In addition, David also has published various articles on the Ocean Ranger sinking and Safety and the Rig in magazines like LexisNexis and Leverage Partnership.
